A joint call for Government action to support Community Energy in Ireland has been issued by Community Energy Federation of Ireland (CEFOI) and two CEFOI members – Community Power and Templederry Wind Farm; the Environmental Justice Network Ireland (ENJI); and REScoop.eu which advocates for community energy at European level.

The letter calls on the Government to

  • support community energy in the next EU Budget (2028-2034)
  • include supportive reforms and investments for energy communities in the National and Regional Partnership Plan
  • support a dedicated budget for the LIFE program, 3 including the LIFE ENERCOM program that specifically supports energy communities
  • translate the EU Citizens Energy Package to create an ambitious national strategy for community energy in Ireland, by addressing the barriers and putting in place strong enabling frameworks. This should include de-freezing the SEAI community energy enabling grant, and maintaining or increasing the SRESS tariff (not reducing it).
  • leverage the Grids Package to support and prioritise community energy projects in their applications for grid connection to ESB Networks.

The call to action is accompanied by an information sheet: Stronger communities, thriving regions – the role of energy communities in Ireland’s National and Regional Partnership Plan (NRPP), which we have sent to Irish MEPs.

Here you can read the full text of our joint letter to Ministers.

We will keep you updated about their responses and actions taken.
